Newsletter #3

Hey folks!

It's been a while since we sent out some updates about jam.coop and we've added a few new features for you to try out. Read on!

What is jam.coop?

jam.coop is an online record store owned co-operatively by musicians and the people who work here. Owning it together means we can rely on it and share in the profits together. We've answered some common questions at jam.coop/about.

Tagging your music

Artists can now tag their music. We support the same set of genre tags that Musicbrainz use, but soon we'll let artists add their own too.

If you're an artist, head to your account dashboard, edit your albums and tag away. Make atmospheric sludge metal? We've got your back.

We'll wait a little while until we have some more music tagged, and then make it easier for people to find music using them. You can get a little peak by following the links on album pages, for example jam.coop/tags/ambient.

Licensing your music

We now make it easy to choose a license for your music, for example the Attribution-NoDerivatives Creative Commons license.

By default everything is "All rights reserved" so if you're an artist there's no need to change anything.

More metadata in your downloads

If you buy music on jam, and we'd love it if you did, the downloaded files now have a bunch of useful metadata (e.g. proper track numbering, release dates) so that they look great wherever you play them.

Atom feeds

You heard us. Keep up with the latest releases on jam like it's 2005 with our Albums Atom feed.

We love feeds, so expect artist-specific, genre feeds and more soon.

jam.coop in the news

Cut off the Spigot wrote about jam.coop in their post Co-Op, Non-Profit, & Other Alternative Music Streaming and Purchasing Platforms to Pay Artists More \$\$.

Financial Report January 2024

Our artists sold £125.50 of digital downloads in January. We paid out £106.68 after deducting our platform fee of 15% (keeping £18.82).

We've been using Wise to pay our artists and they take a fee depending on the location of the artist. Wise fees added up to £1.78 in total for January.

We incur some costs to run jam.coop. Render where we run 2 servers (one for the website, one for background jobs) and a database cost £53.39 in January. We paid postmark £11.90 for sending emails, and AWS $9.76 for S3 storage of artists music and bandwidth for streaming and downloads. Stripe also charged us around £8 in fees for credit card processing.

James and I logged 30 hours work on the project in January. As you can see above, we're not making enough in platform fees to cover the running costs currently, so that work remains unpaid for now. Go Free Range continues to cover the excess running costs.

10 different Artists sold music on jam.coop in January which is very exciting for us. We had 34 new artists creating accounts in January and 51 albums created.
